Russian dating scams are a huge nasty business, but they shouldn’t discourage you from dating Russian or Eastern European ladies. Yes, many people get scammed, but usually this happens only to those who haven’t done their homework and didn’t do their research prior to dating.
This happened to one of our friends, who instead of seeking some advice from us, decided to do it on his own. He didn’t want anyone to know that he was looking for a Russian bride, because he was afraid that people are going to laugh at him. Fortunately, the guy didn’t lose money (other than the money he spent on phone calls and letters), but he did waste quite a bit of time and got his heart broken. When the woman he was “dating” said her mother got ill and she needed a very expensive surgery, our friend got a gut feeling that something was not quite right. He emailed us asking for the advice, gave us more details on his “relationship” and almost right away I knew that he was dealing with a classic scammer.
Because I come from the Eastern Europe (I am half Russian half Ukrainian) and know Russian mentality pretty well, it is easy for me to recognize Russian dating scams. People who are not familiar with Russian culture need to be very careful and do plenty of research before they start their online dating journey.
Here are a few golden rules which you need to follow in order to protect your heart and your wallet:
1. No matter what, don’t send money to the woman you are dating, even if she asks you for some. Actually, I should say, especially if she asks you for some, because decent Russian women (the kind you should be looking for) are modest and have pride, so they will never ask you for the money. If things are getting serious and she can’t afford to pay for plane ticket to come visit you, buy her a ticket, but do not send her the money. Even if you are 100% positive that she is real, be safe just in case.
2. If the girl you are dating says that she needs money for the tourist visa, don’t believe her. It is nearly impossible for single Russian, Ukrainian or Belarussian young women to get a tourist visa to the United States. Fiancé visa, yes, but not the tourist one.
