Russian scams are probably one of the most well known dating scams in the history of Internet. Almost everyone knows someone or heard of someone who has been scammed while trying to find a Russian or an Eastern European bride.
These scams are a pretty huge business and a number of Western men broke their hearts and emptied their wallets because of them. This caused many people (including some of my friends) believe that all these Russian girls that are looking at you from their profiles are scammers and all Russian dating business is a big bogus and scam.
What some people don’t know, Russian scammers are usually not women and some of them are not even Russian. Usually Russian dating scams are organized by a group of people, which are not necessarily Russians. According to some date 25% of “Russian woman” profiles are created by Nigerian scammers.
They steal pictures of Russian models or simply beautiful Russian woman, register on a site and pretend to be lonely sweet little ladies looking for love and later on…money.
Reputable dating agencies such as Elena’s Models scam their members and make sure that their IP address matches the country they are really from. Of course, this is not going to stop some computer-savvy Nigerian dude, but it greatly reduces the possibility of getting scammed.
So yes, some Russian scams are done by Russians, but in 90% they are not done by the Russian or Ukrainian women whose pictures you see on Russian dating websites. Some of these women don’t have a clue that their pictures are used to scam someone or that their pictures are posted on a dating site. There are very few independent women scammers out there.
